495 Cadets Return to the Sky

495 Squadron

Updated: Oct 19, 2021

Following the recent Covid lockdowns, cadets from 495 squadron have recently returned to the air.

On Sunday 2 cadets were lucky enough to have been selected for Gliding at RAF Syerston with 644VGS. The squadron were only notified of this opportunity on Friday afternoon when another squadron were unable to attend.

The Blue Aviation Training includes an introduction to ground school covering basic control surfaces, the primary and further effects of the controls, the clock code and an overview of the Air Cadet Organisation Training Scheme. The cadets then had to complete the parachute drills and egress trainer.

After lunch the cadets headed out onto the airfield. Each cadet had the chance to fly in the Viking Glider which included ‘hands on controls’ under the supervision of their Instructor. When they weren’t flying the cadets had to work hard assisting to launch the gliders into the air.

The cadets thoroughly enjoyed the long day. The day felt even more special as the cadets were taught by our very own Officer Commanding Flt Lt Sheila Wilson who is an Instructor at 644 VGS based at RAF Syerston.

Afterwards Flt Lt Sheila Wilson said “Flying cadets every weekend is amazing. When the cadets are from your own squadron it is a real privilege and a unique experience.”

Congratulations to Cpl Louie Burn and Cpl Kristian Howe who achieved their Blue Gliding Wings.

Hopefully there will be more opportunities for more cadets to go gliding in the near future.
