495 Gets a New Instructor

495 Squadron

495 Sqn gets a new Instructor Cpl Sinead Mooney recently attended a course to allow her to gain an instructional qualification. Here is an account of her experiences. I was offered an opportunity to attend the Wing Method of Instruction Course in October 2018, to allow me to become an instructor at 495 Squadron. The course is in two parts. The first is the one day theory course followed later by a lecture given on the Squadron to the cadets, which is assessed by the Course tutor. The course is open to adult staff and senior cadets who have completed their syllabus training and is intended to develop the correct teaching skills to enable candidates to be able to deliver lessons and lectures at their Squadrons, passing knowledge to younger cadets and developing their understanding of the Air Cadet syllabus. The course lasted a full day and we learnt a variety of skills. The content covered a wide range of subjects from Maslow's “hierarchy of needs” to learning about specific learning disabilities.

We received training and advice in practically every important aspect of being a teacher including the more practical ideas for instructing young cadets.

Following the theory sessions, we had a tea break and my favourite biscuits. After break we were asked to come up with a short lesson which we then had to present in front of the class. During our lecture we were analysed and following this we received feedback from our teachers and peers. We had to pay only £3 for tea and biscuits, a water bottle, a notepad, a chocolate bar and a memory stick. Where else can you get training for so little cost? The memory stick has the course content and other helpful information to create a lesson, for the second part of the assessment. I have to prepare and deliver a 45 minute lecture on my Squadron before I can officially complete the course, which is assessed by the Course tutor. This will take place after Christmas. Overall the experience was extremely helpful, fun and worthwhile. I feel that once I have completed my 45 minute test lesson at 495, I will be able to confidently teach to cadets due to the help from this course. I will also be able to receive a yellow lanyard upon completion of the test.
