495 Radio Stars

495 Squadron

Basic Radio Operator Award

Whilst most of the Squadron were still enjoying their Christmas break, 10 cadets from 495 Squadron joined cadets from other squadrons to learn about radio communications at the North Birmingham Sector Basic Radio Operator Course and the right to wear the coveted “Blue Comms Badge” Following completion of the Basic Radio Communications section of the 1st Class logbook interested cadets can start the Radio Communications Progressive Training System (PTS) syllabus leading to qualifications at Blue, Bronze, Silver and Gold level in radio operating and various associated skills. During the Blue level course cadets learn basic radio operating voice procedures (calling, replying, authentication, radio checks, security and sending and replying to basic messages). At the end of the course cadets are assessed in these skills using radios on-air. Assessors must be trained to the next level (Bronze) and are accredited by the Wing Radio Communications Officer. Successful completion of the assessment leads to a Blue Comms Badge and Basic Radio Operator Certificate. Courses are designed to be run at Squadron/Sector level.

The Blue Badge

The PTS syllabus is optional for cadets and is separate to the classification training syllabus. A word of thanks to 495 Sqn’s new civilian Instructor, Martin Swift, who has breathed new life into communications training, at both Squadron and Wing levels. In addition, to ensure that 495 cadets may make use of their recently acquired skills (and indeed, for other practical uses) the Sqn has purchased eleven small hand held radios for use on the ATC channels. The radios have been programmed to work on the VHF and UHF radio frequencies allocated to the RAFAC by the MOD. They are inexpensive, small, light and the batteries are rechargeable. They are perfect for communicating over relatively short distances and are ideal for cadet training and use on exercises and at local events Flt Lt Brendan O’Neill 495 Squadron
